It is very common for clients to feel surprised or offended when parenting courses are suggested following a separation.
The suggestion for both parents to do parenting courses is not a reflection that either parent is not a good parent. Instead, it is an opportunity for parents to refresh what they already know and to gain additional tools to support their children during a time of significant change.
Post separation parenting courses are valuable to assist parents to navigate co-parenting and caring for their children following a separation in a practical and child-focused way. It is a great opportunity, particularly in the group sessions to discuss with other parents who are in a same or similar place to you about how others are navigating things in a child focused way.
The courses can assist you to:
- Better understand your child’s emotional needs during separation;
- Develop effective co-parenting strategies;
- Improve communication with the other parent; and
- Manage conflict in a way that minimises the impact on your children.
